Numerous aspects benefit from central nervous system imaging in acute stroke patients. Distinction between hemorrhagic and ischemie strokes can be drawn, furthennore other causes of a state, that by symptoms only might be diagnosed as stroke, can be excluded. More and more complex algorithms enable us to estimate extent, gravity and reversibility of ischemie lesions, as well as follow-up the course of treatment and detect complications. The significance of particular applications alters with respect to individual patient features, but also adequately to available therapies. The thesis discusses relations between biological factors and radiological features, measurable imaging parameters, and compares the results obtained by trained radiologists versus automated calculations perfonned by specialized software packages.
