Intensive care units (ICUs) patients are exposed to many risk factors for healthcare associated infections (HAI), especially invasive procedures related to diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of basic systems functions, and mechanical support of the patient's vital functions. The aim of the study was to assess the epidemiology and microbiology of selected HAI in Polish ICUs based on a targeted, active, unified infection surveillance program based on the assumptions of the Healthcare-Associated Infections Surveillance Network, which is the HAI surveillance network created and operated by European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The results of the study showed that the overallepidemiological situation in the ICUs did not differ significantly from those described in the literature. However, in the case of bloodstream infections, a detailed analysis of both epidemiology and microbiology showed a higher incidence compared to other European countries. This may result from the lack of effective supervision over bloodstream infections or indicate difficulties in implementing effective procedures for their prevention. In cases of bloodstream infections and ventilator associated pneumonia, materials optimal from the point of view of microbiological diagnostics were used too rarely, which is an additional problem that may affect the control of infections.
