Supplementation of diet with lactoferrin (Lf) - iron-binding protein - is supposed to prevent the translocation phenomenon. Aim of the study was to obtain defined form of apoLf (iron-depleted) and holoLf (iron-saturated form). Investigation of their biologica) activity was performed on native protein and manganese-saturated Lf (MnLf). Tested lactoferrin species had no significant impact on bacterial populations of species important for pathogenesis of neonatal sepsis. Only MnLf significantly improved growth of all tested Lactobacillus strains. Various Lf species did not affect apoptosis and necrosis levels in Caco-2 cell line. All tested forms sustained levels of tight-junction proteins in epithelialc cells.
